They asked me if I wouldn’t mind trying a box of their grass-fed beef in exchange for an unbiased and objective review of the Plaid Cow Society beef and the delivery service to my home.

About a week after they contacted me, a cold, thick corrugated box was delivered to my door.
The Plaid Cow Society grass-fed meats were well-packed in a thick corrugated box with a foam insulated liner and several cold packs to keep the fresh meat cool. When I opened the box, the various cuts of beef were nicely arranged in an attractive presentation and not just thrown in the box.
I was expecting to receive a few cuts of meat, but was pleasantly surprised when a box containing the 1 Person Plan arrived at my door, which consists of 12 delicious fresh and not frozen cuts of meat, fully trimmed and vacuum sealed arrived.

How Does Plaid Cow Society Work
Plaid Cow Society, based in Pasedena, CA, is a distributor of 100% US grown grass fed beef. To ensure this, Plaid Cow Society only works closely with US based farms and ranchers that raise USDA certified grass fed beef.
As their motto says, “Teenagers have raging hormones, Your Beef shouldn’t.” As the parent of a teenager and soon-to-be teenager, I can totally relate to this, and I am sure you can too.
When you place an order for grass-fed beef from the Plaid Cow Society website, you have one of two options: a delivery once a month or two times a month.
Unfortunately, at this time you can’t pick and choose the cuts of beef that you want in the box, or place smaller orders. Hopefully in time, they will expand their product offering to allow people to place smaller or even larger orders, or pick and choose the cuts of beef they want.
What Comes in the Box?
The Plaid Cow Society box of US grown and USDA certified grass fed beef weighs approximately 6-7 lbs, and contained 12 cuts of beef, that is trimmed and vacuum sealed ready for cooking:

The 1 Person Plan is delivered once a month, and the 2 Person Plan has the same cuts of beef delivered twice a month.
How to Cook Grass-fed Steaks?
Don’t worry if you have never cooked any of the types of grass fed steaks in the box, or even if you have never cooked a grass fed steak before.
I did notice the lean, less fatty consistency of the grass-fed meat produced a more flavorful steak. Grass-fed meat can be a bit chewier as compared to mean from grain-fed cows.

Are there Health Benefits of Eating Grass-Fed Beef?
There are significant health benefits for both you and the cow, to eating grass-fed beef.
If you’re eating meat from a cow that was fed grains with hormones or antibiotics, there is a likelihood you are digesting these artificial additives, and what are the long-term health implications to adults, children and even unborn babies of ingesting hormones and antibiotics?
Grass-fed beef may have some heart-health benefits that other types of beef don’t have. When compared with other types of beef, grass-fed beef may have:
Less total fat content.
More heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
More conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat that’s thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risks.

Cattle that are allowed a grass fed diet, are able to move around as they eat the grass, as compared to many corporate farms that have so many cattle and little grass, they have limited ability to move around.
Grass fed cows tends to have a lower level of fat, meaning the beef will leaner and have a lower level of fat. Studies show a grass fed steer has about 1/3 less fat than a steer fed a grain-based diet, and has a higher amount of omega-3 fatty acids.
Grass-fed beef is naturally loaded with vital natural minerals and vitamins, and it’s a great source of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) a fat that reduces the risk of cancer, obesity, diabetes, and a number of immune disorders.
Some people say beef should have a certain amount of fat or marbling to enhance the flavor. This could be further from the truth. Allowing the steer to roam the fields and eat grass, the way nature intended, produces meat that is more tender and flavorful, due to the grasses it ingests, and the less stress the animal goes through by not being cramped into a pen.

When you buy beef from your local grocery store, it goes from a corporate ranch to the slaughterhouse, then to a freezer for up to a month. From there it goes to your grocer distribution center for up to a week, and finally to the local grocery store where it can stay for up to a another week.

This is a three step process, vs a multi step process that can take weeks or even a month, from the ranch to your plate.
How Do Grass Fed Steaks Taste Compared to Store Bought Steaks?
The steaks from Plaid Cow Society were some of the most delicious looks steaks I have seen. They were fully trimmed and had virtually no fat or marbling.
Since they were so lean, they cooked up on our grill in about half the time of store-bought steaks, and I noticed there was very little shrinkage of the meat after cooking.
Grass fed beef definitely has a fresher taste, and is a bit chewier.
Grass fed beef is more expensive than beef from grain-fed cows, but the taste and health benefits are worth the investment, since you are not ingesting hormones given to the cows to make them fatter, and grass-fed beef is lower in fat and higher in omega-3 fatty acids and other vital nutrients.
How Plaid Cow Society compares to competition?
While Plaid Cow is a relatively new player in the grass-fed meat home delivery market, the fact that they have negotiated aggressive prices that allows them to offer very competitive prices, compared to the competition. I checked several other grass-fed beef sellers, and Plaid Cow Society was the same price or cheaper in most cases.
A few aspects of the website that need improving are:
- You can’t easily remove items from the cart, or cancel and start your order over.
- It seems you can only add items to your cart right now. I’m sure this issue will be corrected soon.
