What is a masticating juicer

Buying a juicing machine to make fresh squeezed juice for you and your family can be good for your health, especially with so many kids juices including added sugar, corn syrup and other unhealthy additives, but the decision of which juicer to buy can be confusing.

As a stay at home dad I am always looking for tools and gadgets that helps make my job easier.   My goal is to help me provide cost effective, nutritious and healthy foods and beverages for my kids.

There are several types of juicing machines on the market today at various price points with different features and capabilities.  While your first choice may be to buy the cheapest juicer, which is a reasonable one, it may not be the best choice. While a cheap juicer may look good at the store, but once you get it home and start using your juicing machine, the drawbacks of why it is a cheap juicer may become obvious.

Our research indicates that the best juicer is a masticating juicer.  You will learn the benefits of a masticating juicer over a centrifugal juicer, which is the most common juicer on the market that spins to extract the juice.

What is a Masticating Juicer?

Let’s start with the basic question – what is the best masticating juicer?  A masticating juicer grinds the fruit and vegetables up similar to the way your teeth grinds up food as you chew it, and is the most efficient way to fully extract juice from fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and grasses.  A masticating  juicer has the added benefit of being able to grind up nuts, coffee, wheat and many other items, in addition to making your favorite healthy juice.

The Omega 8006 Juicer is a low speed juicer that has a single gear designed to crush the fruits, vegetables and grasses and fully extract its healthy juice.  A masticating juicer has an auger that spins at just 80 RPM.  This is compared to a centrifugal juicer with teeth that spins at 1,650 to  as high as 15,000 rpm.  The benefit of the low speed of the masticating juicer is that it protects and maintains healthy enzymes in the juice.  This prevents oxidation and allows juice to be stored up to 72 hours without degradation.

Most juicers on the market today are centrifugal juicers.   They spin at a high rate of speed, as teeth grind the flesh of the fruit or vegetable into pulp.  The high speed spinning motion separates the juice from the flesh.

This type of juicer is designed to extract the juice from soft or hard fruits and veggies, but can’t do much with leafy greens and grasses.

The Omega 8006 masticating juicer is the most versatile juicer on the market today.   It can make juice from soft and hard vegetables.   This juicer can extract juice from leafy greens and wheatgrass.  Mmany natural health experts say is the most healthy juice you can drink.  Wheatgrass contains many natural enzymes that defend against most health conditions, including cancer.

  2. The more conventional type of juicer used by people and widely available is the centrifugal type. These types of juicers don’t use grinding or chewing actions but instead use a shredding disc that turns at high speed into order to process the fruit and vegetables. As the disc spins the centrifugal force within the machine is what separates the extracted juice from the pulp and then releases it into a container.

  5. Thanks for all info. I did my own test at home and found my old Braun centrifugal made more and sweeter juice than my new slow juicer Witt by Kuvings. That was very disappointing! I also tested my Witt against my friend’s horizontal slow juicer from Philips. My Witt made much more, but Philips made much cooler juice. All ingredients measured and the same temp before. Does the horizontal makes cooler juice than the vertical?

    • Hey James,

Thanks for your comment – Does the horizontal makes cooler juice than the vertical?

      The simple answer is yes.

      I found at:

      https://thejuicerdirectory.com/masticating-vs-centrifugal-juicers/

The slow press masticating juicers squeeze the juice out of the food very slowly using a masticating or chewing motion, the way we chew our food, so there isn’t a lot of friction created.

Since it is done so slowly, there isn’t a lot of heat built up either, which is common with vertical or centrifugal juicers, which create heat as the food spins at high RPM.

Many juicing enthusiasts are quite concerned about the heat and friction factor since they believe that this can kill the enzymes in the food.

      Hope this helps.
